01 / Problems we fix

Common microwave problems we repair.

Most microwave faults sit in the door switches, the controls or the high-voltage heating circuit. Here is what each symptom usually means.

  • Microwave Not Heating

A microwave that runs but leaves food cold has a fault in the high-voltage circuit: the magnetron, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. A failed door switch can also stop heating while the light and turntable keep working.

  • Microwave Won’t Start

No response when you press start usually points to a door switch, the control board, a blown fuse or the door latch not engaging. Many microwaves also have a child lock that is easy to set by accident.

  • Turntable Not Rotating

A turntable that sits still has a worn drive motor, a broken coupler or a roller ring that is out of place. The microwave will still heat, but unevenly.

  • Control Panel Not Responding

Buttons that do nothing, or that press themselves, point to a worn membrane keypad, a faulty control board or moisture in the panel. Replacing the keypad or board usually fixes it.

  • Door Problems

A door that won’t latch, a broken handle or a cracked door frame stops the microwave from running and can affect safety interlocks. We repair latches, hinges, handles and switches.

  • Sparking, Buzzing or Burning Smell

Arcing inside the cavity often comes from a damaged waveguide cover, chipped interior paint or a metal object. A loud buzz with no heat points to the magnetron or diode. Stop using the microwave until it is checked.

  • Display, Light or Vent Fan Problems

A dead display, a bulb that has failed or a vent fan that won’t run on an over-the-range unit are all repairable. Vent fans that run constantly usually have a stuck thermostat or a control fault.

02 / In detail

Over-the-Range Microwave Repair

Over-the-range microwaves double as range hoods, so they take grease and heat as well as daily use. Vent fans, charcoal filters, lights, door latches and control panels are the common repairs. We service over-the-range units from GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire and Bosch.

Built-In and Drawer Microwave Repair

Built-in microwaves and microwave drawers are sized to cabinetry, which makes repair far more practical than replacement. We service built-in and drawer models from KitchenAid, Bosch, Thermador, JennAir, Viking, Wolf and Sharp.

Microwaves store a dangerous charge in the capacitor even when unplugged. Leave the cover on and let a technician handle anything inside the cabinet.

Microwave Repair vs. Replacement

A countertop microwave is usually cheaper to replace than to repair, and we will say so. Built-in and over-the-range microwaves are different: replacement often means matching a trim kit or cabinet opening, so a door switch, keypad or magnetron repair is usually the sensible choice.

  • Age of the appliance

An older appliance approaching the end of its typical useful life may not justify an expensive repair.

  • Repair cost

Compare the expected repair expense with the cost of purchasing and installing a comparable replacement.

  • Overall condition

An appliance that has otherwise been dependable may be an excellent repair candidate.

  • Previous repairs

Repeated failures can change the economics of another repair.

  • Replacement cost

Premium refrigerators, ranges and other high-end appliances can be expensive to replace, making repair particularly worthwhile in some situations.

$75 Diagnostic Service

Our $75 diagnostic fee covers the inspection and diagnosis and is applied toward the approved repair.

Is it worth repairing a microwave?

For over-the-range, built-in and drawer microwaves, usually yes, because they are sized to the cabinetry and cost far more to replace. For a basic countertop microwave, replacement is normally cheaper, and we will tell you that up front.

My microwave runs but doesn’t heat. What is wrong?

The high-voltage heating circuit, most often the magnetron, diode or capacitor, or a door switch that has failed. These parts are replaceable.

Why does my microwave spark?

Arcing usually comes from a damaged waveguide cover, chipped paint inside the cavity or metal in the oven. Stop using it until it has been checked.

Can you replace the door handle or latch?

Yes. Handles, latches, hinges and door switches are common repairs on over-the-range and built-in microwaves.

How much does microwave repair cost?

It depends on the appliance, the problem and the parts required. Our $75 diagnostic fee covers the inspection and diagnosis and is applied toward the approved repair. You receive the estimate before any approved work starts.

Do you repair microwave drawers?

Yes. We service drawer microwaves from Sharp, Bosch, KitchenAid, Thermador, Wolf and JennAir.
