01 / Problems we fix

Common freezer problems we repair.

Soft ice cream, frost on the packages and a motor that never stops are the three signs we hear most. Each has a short list of causes.

  • Freezer Not Freezing

Soft ice cream and thawing food point to a failing compressor start relay, a condenser or evaporator fan, a defrost problem that has iced the coil, a bad thermostat or a sealed-system fault. We test from the simple to the serious.

  • Excessive Frost or Ice Buildup

Frost on the walls and packages means moist air is getting in or the defrost cycle has failed. Worn door gaskets, a door held ajar by packages, or a failed defrost heater, timer or thermostat are the usual causes.

  • Freezer Temperature Fluctuating

Temperatures that swing usually involve the thermostat or thermistor, a damper, a failing fan or a defrost cycle that runs too often. Fluctuations also cause freezer burn.

  • Freezer Running Constantly

A freezer that never stops has dirty condenser coils, a failing fan, a poor door seal or a low refrigerant charge. It runs up your electricity bill while struggling to hold temperature.

  • Freezer Leaking Water

Water under the freezer usually comes from a blocked defrost drain or a cracked drain pan. Inside the freezer, a sheet of ice on the floor points to the same drain.

  • Freezer Making Unusual Noises

Clicking, buzzing and rattling relate to the compressor relay, the fans or a loose drain pan. A fan blade hitting ice is a sign the defrost system needs attention.

  • Freezer Door Not Sealing

Torn or hardened gaskets, a sagging door or a freezer that is not level let warm air in. Gasket replacement is a straightforward, worthwhile repair.

02 / In detail

Upright and Chest Freezer Repair

Standalone freezers are simpler than refrigerators but their faults are the same: relays, fans, thermostats, defrost parts and gaskets. We service upright and chest freezers from Frigidaire, GE, Whirlpool, Kenmore and others, and will tell you honestly when an older chest freezer with a sealed-system leak is not worth repairing.

Built-In and Refrigerator Freezers

Built-in freezer columns from Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking, and the freezer section of French-door and side-by-side refrigerators, are worth repairing because replacement is costly. See our refrigerator repair page for problems that affect both compartments.

$75 Diagnostic Service

Our technician inspects your appliance and diagnoses the problem. When applicable under Alliance’s current policy, the diagnostic fee is applied toward the completed repair.

Freezer Repair FAQs

Still have a question? Tell us the appliance, the model number and what it’s doing.

Call (571) 303-8548

My freezer is full of frost. What causes that?

Either moist air is getting in through a worn gasket or a door that doesn’t close fully, or the defrost cycle has stopped working. The technician checks the seal first, then the defrost heater, timer and thermostat.

What should I do while I wait for the technician?

Keep the door closed. A full freezer holds temperature for many hours. If food is already thawing, move it to a cooler with ice.

Do you repair chest freezers?

Yes. Chest and upright freezers share most of their parts with refrigerators, and the common repairs are modest.

Is it worth repairing an old freezer?

If the fault is a relay, fan, thermostat, gasket or defrost part, usually yes. If an older freezer has lost its refrigerant charge, we will tell you honestly whether replacement makes more sense.

Do you repair Sub-Zero freezer columns?

Yes. See our Sub-Zero page for the cooling, ice and temperature problems we see most on built-in refrigeration.

How much does freezer repair cost?

It depends on the appliance, the problem and the parts required. Our $75 diagnostic service covers the inspection and diagnosis, and when applicable under our current policy the fee is applied toward the completed repair. You receive the estimate before any work starts.
